Halcyon Chamber Series is pleased to open its 2015-2016 Concert Season at Scholes Street Studio with Tchaikovsky's masterful string sextet, Souvenir de Florence, and Reinhold Gliere's Eight Duets for violin and cello.
About Souvenir de Florence
Few string players would not wax poetic about Tchaikovsky's string sextet, an orchestration that shows the interplay of voices but is lush enough to rival an orchestral texture. We know and love Tchaikovsky as a composer of big works (Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Symphony Pathetique, to name a few), but Souvenir de Florence stands out as a chamber music masterpiece, and one of Tchaikovsky's favorite works. Begun while visiting Florence, Italy in 1981, the piece evokes his memories of the city; however, Tchaikovsky's penchant for Russian folk melodies and "traditional" Russian music shines through. Keep an ear our for waltz-like melodies that remind one of Swan Lake, and front-heavy Gypsy-style marches. We won't mind if you get up to dance.
